Needless to say, the first season ofThe Last of Uswas truly incredible. Based on the video game that was released over a decade ago, the show featured Hollywood’s beloved Pedro Pascal as Joel, who ventured out into the unknown terrors of the post-apocalyptic world to save Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a girl who is more or less a daughter-figure to Joel in the storyline.

The first season portrayed the story of the first game, which was Joel’s attempt to save Ellie (who is immune from the Cordyceps virus) from being used by The Fireflies to create a cure for the virus. Pascal’s character realized they could potentially kill Ellie for the vaccine.
Joel, who was a doctor for The Fireflies, deviates from the original plan to bring Ellie to a haven and help develop a cure against the virus. He kills the head of the operations, Marlene, and proceeds to protect Ellie from them. However, there’s a major twist in the second game that fans are dreading.

Pedro Pascal’s Joel could get killed in The Last of Us Season 2
To explain what the statement above means, Joel escapes with Ellie to Jackson, Wyoming, in the video game. Unfortunately, Joel experiences a horrible death at the hands of Abby, a member of the Washington Liberation Front.
Abby’s motive to kill Joel was driven by the death of her father, Jerry Anderson, whom the latter was responsible for. The storyline ofThe Last of Us Part IIis based on Ellie’s desire to seek revenge against Abby.

Obviously, fans of the game were wary of expectingPedro Pascal’s character to be killed in Season 2. But considering how impactful his role was in Season 1, a gory death isn’t something they’d want to digest for the second time.
“That trailer absolutely slaps”: The Last of Us Season 2 Trailer is What Gives us Hope Pedro Pascal Will Save the TV Industry in 2025
In an interview withEsquire Magazine, Pascal addressed the possibility of Joel being killed in Season 2. He said,
It wouldn’t make sense to follow the first game so faithfully only to stray severely from the path.

EvenBella Ramseyexpressed her thoughts on the potential twist claiming she isn’t emotionally ready for it to happen. However, showrunner Craig Mazin gave Esquire Magazine a vague explanation of what Season 2 will show us. He said,
This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters… But the important thing to note is that neither Neil [Druckmann] nor I feel constrained by the source material.

So there is some hope around the possibility of Joel being spared inThe Last of UsSeason 2. However, this isn’t where the concerns end.
The Last of Us Season 2 cannot risk omitting details of Joel’s death
In the video game, Joel gets brutally murdered. And by that, we mean it’s something that a lot of people cannot handle. So, if Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann opt to kill off Joel, they cannot afford to make changes to the scene to make it watchable.
For example, in theHouse of the DragonSeason 2, the scenes involving the murders carried out by Blood and Cheese weren’t as brutal or gory as how it was portrayed in the book.George R. R. Martinhimself agreed that it was delivered in an underwhelming manner.
According toBleeding Cool, GRRM argued with other writers who wanted to cut Maelor Targaryen in Season 2 due to budget concerns. Maelor was a part of the storyline in the bookFire & Blood, that Season 2 had followed but wasn’t included in the script.Ryan Condalwas allegedly trying to postpone the character rather than cutting him off entirely.
George R.R. Martin Has Every Reason to Hate House of the Dragon for Omitting the Only Character That Challenges ‘Only Valyrians Can Ride Dragons’ Rule
As a result, several fans of the book also criticized these changes. The Last of UsSeason 2 could face a similar fate if they downplay the intensity of Joel’s death.
HBO also recently releasedThe Last of UsSeason 2’s trailer which features Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s characters interacting. But it does not hint at the potential death of Joel at all. The second season is all set to be released sometime next year.
The Last of Uscan be streamed on HBO Max.
