Fans have long been used to expecting the unexpected when it comes to theMarvelmovies, especially when it comes to the studio’s choice of directors. No one expected the studio to hireTaika Waititi(What We Do in the Shadows) to directThor: Ragnarok, but the move made more sense when producer andMarvelStudios presidentKevin Feigerevealed he wanted the director to inject more humor intoThor: Ragnarok.The Wrapcaught up with the filmmaker at the Sundance Film Festival, where he briefly discussed his approach to the humor.

“Just take what they’ve done before. I’m just going to take the secondThorfilm and just add some jokes to that.”

Taika Waititisigned on to direct back in October, and we also reported thatMark Ruffalois coming back as Hulk. Both Thor and Hulk are said to go on a “cosmic road trip” in this superhero sequel, but no specific plot details have been released thus far. Another report from October teased that the script byChristopher YostandCraig Kyleis the darkest yet in theMarvelCinematic Universe, but their script is now being rewritten byStephany Folsom.

Taika Waititi, best known for directing light-hearted comedies such asEagle Vs. Sharkand this year’sWhat We Do in the Shadows, is believed to have come aboard to add a comedic balance. The story has been rumored to center on the Norse Apocalypse, but no specific plot details have been given. This new report claims that Hulk and Thor will encounter the Valkyries throughout their journey, and that this movie could introduce the Marvel heroine named Valkyrie, a.k.a. Brunnhilde, as well. Valkyrie was first introduced in the Avengers comics, and she was also connected to The Defenders andDoctor Strange. Valkyrie’s most notable enemy was The Enchantress, a character who may also be introduced on the big screen inThor: Ragnarok.

Chris Hemsworth(Thor) andTom Hiddleston(Loki) are returning forThor: Ragnarok, withJaimie Alexander(Lady Sif) expected to return as well. It isn’t known ifNatalie Portman(Jane Foster),Anthony Hopkins(Odin) andIdris Elba(Heimdall) are coming back to reprise their roles in the sequel.Thor: Ragnarokis scheduled for release on August 24, 2025, just a few months afterGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2arrives on June 22, 2025.
