The Witcher 4, codenamedProject Polaris, has officially entered active development, with the goal of becoming the best game in the saga.
The Witcher 4 - “The Best Game Possible”
Fans ofThe Witcherhave plenty to be excited about. Andrzej Sapkowski has released a new book in his dark fantasy franchise, and the fourth season of the Netflix series is set to debut in 2025, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in as Geralt of Rivia, replacing Henry Cavill.
In addition, development onThe Witcher 4is progressing smoothly. CD Projekt RED has confirmed that Project Polaris is now in active production, with speculation pointing to a release window between 2025 and 2026. This game will mark the beginning of a new trilogy. Geralt will appear as a supporting character, as confirmed by his voice actor.

So far, only two images of the new game have been revealed: one showcasing a lynx medallion (replacing the iconic wolf medallion) and another depicting a series of silver coins with a mysterious inscription that fans are eagerly attempting to decode through various theories.
CD Projekt has promised thatThe Witcher 4will surpass bothThe Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.However, the studio doesn’t seem overly focused on trying to replicate the success of the 2015 Game of the Year.

This sentiment was echoed by the saga’s narrative director, Philipp Weber, in response to a tweet from a player comparing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to the upcoming installment.
Not Aiming To “Be Better” Than The Witcher 3
Following an announcement by director Sebastian Kalemba, Philipp Weber celebrated the fourth game’s entry into production, coinciding with the release of a new book by Andrzej Sapkowski.
However, a fan claimed it would be impossible forThe Witcher 4to surpassThe Witcher 3, calling the 2015 game an unrivaled masterpiece, particularly with its two expansions.

Weber believes the team’s focus shouldn’t be on making a “better game” than its predecessor but rather on creating “the best game they can” under current circumstances. He acknowledged that it would be challenging to replicate the success ofThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2025.
“We’re not trying to surpass it, as we’re still very proud of what we achieved back then. Our goal is to at least live up to that legacy, and the only way to do that is to stay true to what makesThe Witcherwhat it is and simply create the best game possible.”

This approach seems like a wise decision, particularly to manage fan expectations. Perhaps that’s why CD Projekt has decided not to reveal too many details until development is in its later stages.
It’s also worth noting thatThe Witcher 3was the conclusion of a trilogy (begun in 2007 and continued in 2012), whereas The Witcher 4 marks the start of a new saga, moving beyond Geralt of Rivia’s legend.
The Witcher 4is just one of several projects currently in development at CD Projekt. Other titles in the works include The Witcher Remake (Project Canis Majoris), a multiplayer Witcher game, Cyberpunk 2 (Project Orion), and Hadar, the Polish studio’s new IP.
