Surviving in a Threatening Sci-Fi Setting

The Alters is a simulation game developed by 11 Bit Studios with survival elements and a unique sci-fi setting. The concept of the game revolves around having to manage multiple versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski, created through the use of a new substance called Rapidium.

With this mysterious element, the player can create alters whose stories, personalities and job skills vary according to past decisions. Each of them may play a different role in the mobile base, and it’ll be necessary to make sure they’re satisfied with their current situation, balancing out their needs.

You don’t need to be an experienced survivalist with a degree to enjoy these video games.

There are multiple endings depending on player choice and the developer points out that it’ll not be possible to solve everyone’s issues. The choices to make will be complicated at times and character dynamics may evolve to create even more problems to deal with.

Managing Multiple Selves to Survive

In The Alters, Jan Dolski was just one member of an expedition to a hostile planet. As they reached the target area, however, the group crash-landed and he was the only survivor. Using the technology he finds there, he starts recreating a crew to survive.

As previously pointed out by the developers in theexpedition logs, the game is designed around mixing two different sorts of experience. On the one hand, we have survival simulation, which demands careful management of your resources. On the other, a narrative with challenging decisions and the philosophical aspect of shaping destiny.

With the alternate versions of the protagonist as a driving force, the game aims at giving an extra narrative push to this discussion. Not only is dealing with the whole team a matter of risk and reward, but there’s also the importance of keeping everyone well-rested and trying to optimize survival and advancing the plot.

The concept of the game revolves around having to manage multiple versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski, created through the use of a new substance called Rapidium.

As everyone in the crew is a different version of the protagonist, there’s also a personal aspect to making everyone cooperate and reaching a good ending. The developers, however, expect that no strategy will be a fail-proof way to deal with every crisis smoothly and some unforeseen circumstances will complicate matters.

The Alters will launch in Standard and Digital Deluxe Editions. The latter includes deluxe outfits, the original soundtrack and an undisclosed future DLC available after release.
