With the January 26 premiere date just a few weeks away, the cast of The CW’sRiverdalekeeps getting bigger. The upcoming series has brought onMolly Ringwaldin a recurring role as Mary Andrews, the mother ofKJ Apa’sArchie Andrews. Here’s a description of the character, and how she fits into the story below.
“Having left Riverdale two years ago to follow her dreams, Ringwald’s Mary Andrews comes back to town in her family’s hour of need. She not only reconnects with Archie (played by New Zealand actor K.J. Apa) and her husband, Fred (90210’sLuke Perry), but also her former high school gal-pals Hermione and Alice, just in time for a Homecoming Dance.”
TV Linereports thatMolly Ringwaldwill appear in two episodes ofRiverdale Season 1, starting with the 10th episode. It has been previously announced that Hermione will be played byMarisol NicholswhileMadchen Amickis playing Alice. While this series is based on the iconic Archie Comics, it’s clear these characters won’t be the same as in the comics.
As a new school year begins, the town ofRiverdaleis reeling from the recent, tragic death of high school golden boy Jason Blossom - and nothing feels the same… Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) is still the all-American teen, but the summer’s events made him realize that he wants to pursue a career in music - not follow in his dad’s footsteps - despite the sudden end of his forbidden relationship with Riverdale’s young music teacher, Ms. Grundy (Sarah Habel). Which means Archie doesn’t have anyone who will mentor him - certainly not singer Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who is only focused on her band, the soon-to-be-world-famous Pussycats.
The ensemble cast also includesCole SprouseasJughead Jones, Archie’s longtime friend and budding writing,Lili Reinhartas Betty Cooper, who still isn’t ready to reveal her amorous feelings for Archie,Camila Mendesas Veronica Lodge, who returns to Riverdale from New York with her mother Hermione, andMadelaine Petschas Cheryl Blossom,Riverdale’s Queen Bee who is happy to stir up trouble amongst Archie, Betty, and Veronica, but Cheryl is keeping secrets of her own, about the death of her twin brother Jason.Molly Ringwaldmost recently starred in the TV seriesRaising Expectationsand the big screen adaptation ofJem and the Holograms. She also had a five-year-stint on the ABC Family seriesThe Secret Life of an American Teenagerfrom 2008 to 2013.
