The eagerly anticipatedPeaky Blindersmovieis just undergoing “final polishes”, confirms series creatorSteven Knight. First debuting in 2013, the British drama told the story of the Shelby family, who run various legal and illegal enterprises across Birmingham following the First World War. Despite appearing in major blockbusters likeOppenheimer,Inception,The Dark Knighttrilogy, and28 Days Later, Cillian Murphy is perhaps most synonymous with playing the family’s brooding and emotionally scarred ‘leader’, Thomas Shelby.
Speaking toNMEto promote his new series,This Town, Steven Knight was asked about the current state of thePeaky Blindersmovie, which was first confirmed back in 2021. Knight said the project is moving ahead well, with shooting set to begin this September.
“It’s gonna happen. It’s gonna happen this September. I’m just doing the final polishes, which will continue up until the day before we start shooting. But we’re there. We’ve got everything sorted, we’ve got all the commitments we need, we are ready to go. I think the film is gonna be a step-up again, and it’s gonna be great that Peaky fans can meet in one place and watch it. The budget will be bigger, but also because we know we’re ending this chapter, we’re all going to try to do our best.”
Peaky Blindersfans are desperatefor the Shelbys to return, this time on the big screen, following the dramatic conclusion to the show’s 6th and final season. (Without major spoilers) the shocking finale saw Tommy Shelby ride off into the distance, with his family and loved ones presuming him to be dead. Knight didn’t give away any details about the plot, and nothing has officially been released, but the show’s creator did tease that the film will leave audiences feeling “shocked and delighted and horrified and then delighted again and then shocked again!”

During the interview, Steven Knight addressedCillian Murphy’s return as Thomas Shelbyin the upcoming film. Knight said that Murphy is desperate to return to the character.
“Cillian [Murphy] is really up for it. So I can’t wait for it to start shooting.”
Knight was also asked about Murphy’s recent Oscar success. Cillian Murphy stunned audiences with his gripping portrayal of Robert J. Oppenheimer, the father of the Atomic Bomb, inChristopher Nolan’s Academy Award sweepingOppenheimer. Knight had nothing but praise for the actor, saying, “Isn’t it amazing? I’m so pleased for him because he deserves it.” He then said that, despite his international success as a movie star, Murphy is still eager to return to the world ofPeaky Blinders.
“After every award that he won, he would text and say, ‘I really can’t wait to be doing Peaky.’ Confirming that none of this was going to change what we’re going to do next.”
