The 96th Academy Awards are around the corner, just two months away. It is set to take place on Sunday, March 10th, at the Dolby Theatre.Oppenheimertakes the lead with a whopping 13 nominations at this year’s Oscars, closely followed byPoor Thingswith 11 andKillers of the Flower Moonwith a strong 10.

The ultimate face-off at the Oscars seems to be brewing between Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimerand Greta Gerwig’sBarbie,which boasts eight nods.
As for Marvel, the big question is: Will any of them have its movie has a chance of snatching the statuette this year?The 2024 Oscar nomination list hints that Marvel might be getting pushed out of the door after a lackluster year at the movies.

How Many Oscar Wins and Nominations Does the MCU Have?
Out of the 33 films the MCU has released so far—excluding any TV shows related to the MCU (as they are not eligible for the Oscars)—the franchise has received a total of 19 Academy Award nominations.
It has succeeded most in the Best Visual Effects category at the Academy Awards. MCU films likeIron Man, The Avengers, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War,andAvengers: Endgamehave received a total of ten nominations in this category.

In addition,Iron Manearned a nomination for Best Sound Editing, andGuardians of the Galaxysecured a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
The rest of the nominations are for Marvel’sBlack Panther.It stands out as a true director’s vision with quality storytelling, acting, and production design, receiving nominations in seven categories: Best Picture, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Sound Editing.

So far, only two of the franchise’s films have managed to snag Academy Awards. The first isBlack Panther,which won three Oscars:Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson; Best Production Design for Hannah Beachler (Production Design) and Jay Hart (Set Decoration); and Best Costume Design for Ruth E. Carter.
It broke barriers as the first superhero film with a Best Picture nomination. Following in its footsteps,Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverearned twelve nominations and took home ten awards in total.

Why Marvel Films Don’t Do Well at the Oscars
Despite immense popularity at the box office, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only received sporadic nods in technical categories.
Genre films, including superhero narratives, often face challenges in garnering Oscars. It means that the Academy Awards voters favor certain genres.
