Among the many reveals at the Game Awards 2024 was an announcement trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign. This surprise title is a follow-up to 2022’s wildly successful Elden Ring, but it isn’t a sequel. Instead, it’s a multiplayer co-op roguelike game using elements from Elden Ring’s core gameplay.
The trailer offers a quick three-minute glimpse at some of the environments players will traverse and the heroes they can pick. More details about Nightreign can be found in the video description, as well as onthe game’s official website: this is a standalone full game, not a DLC. But instead of being a sequel, it’s a spin-off game. Nightreign is a roguelike in which players navigate through different environments in each playthrough. They also won’t get to create their own character like they usually do in FromSoft’s Souls games. Instead, they choose to play as one of eight different heroes — each featuring unique abilities. In typical roguelike fashion, there will be ways to improve these characters across runs. While there is support for solo play, Elden Ring Nightreign is meant to be played in groups of three. The multiplayer is entirely cooperative. Players will work together to survive for three days and defeat the boss on the third night.
Since Nightreign is co-published by Bandai Namco, past Dark Souls enemies are also shown in the trailer, including the Nameless King. Unfortunately, it is unlikely for Bloodborne enemies to make appearances in Nightreign, as the game was published by Sony.
