NetherRealm Studios upcoming Mortal Kombat 12 will reportedly not use that moniker.
There are a few things we know about the upcoming Mortal Kombat game. 1) It is indeed real and that anannouncement is imminentand 2) it’ll likely be some form of reboot after Fire God Liu Kang reset the timeline at the end of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. The exact name, platforms, and more in-depth details about the game remain a mystery. However, it was previously believed that the game would be titled Mortal Kombat 12 after Andrew Slabin, Warner Bros. Discovery’s executive vice president of global investor strategy,revealed it as such during a earnings report. That does not seem to be the case.
Taking to Twitter. Well-known leakerbillbil-kunrevealed that game will actually be titled Mortal Kombat 1. Furthermore, he revealed the game would launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Switch and that there’d be standard ($69.99 for current-gen, $59.99 for Switch), Premium ($109.99), and Kollector’s ($249.99 on current-gen consoles only) editions.Windows Centralhas corroborated these details all while throwing in some additional wrinkles. According to them, the game will launch in September with DC’s Peacemaker and The Boys' Homelander being potential DLC guest fighters.
Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath ended with Fire God Liu Kang resetting the series timeline before meeting with The Great Kung Lao and naming him is champion. It’s entirely possible that Mortal Kombat 1 picks up there, or flashes back to a new, rebooted version of the original Mortal Kombat. Despite the rebooted nature of this game, we’d still hazard a guess that many of the franchise’s most popular fighters will still make an appearance. However, we still hope that NetherRealm Studios keeps spots open for newcomers as well as bringing back some fan favorite 3D era characters, including Kenshi, Havik, Onaga, and Hotaru.
