Monster Hunter Wildsis one of Capcom’s biggest bets for 2025. While the company assures that issues seen in the beta have been resolved, they are also showcasing new and terrifying monsters—one of which was revealed in an exclusive interview: Nu Udra. This fearsome beast has been a nightmare and will continue to be for players who dare to face it.
Monster Hunter Wilds IntroducesThe Oilwell Basin
In the interview,Monster Hunter Wilds’executive and artistic director, Kaname Fujioka—who also directed the firstMonster Hunter—explains the ideas behind the creation of this monster and its ecosystem.
Fujioka begins by explaining the concept behind the development of the Oilwell Basin, the habitat of this beast. He compares it to the Coral Highlands from World, in the sense that it is a vertical environment with an ecosystem that shifts depending on elevation.

In Wilds, the Oilwell Basinis a desert-like region that changes significantly based on altitude and season: from fiery lava-filled depths to the higher areas where the oil that fuels the flames below is exposed to the sun, forming vast slicks of slippery mud.
This entire setting seems to serve as a veil for ancient ruins lost to time. The oil-covered surfaces, sometimes set ablaze, create a desolate and highly hostile environment, yet life persists against the odds. Depending on the season, notable changes occur. During Autumn and harsher conditions, the area becomes covered in soot, presenting an entirely different landscape compared to other seasons, where life is more abundant.

New Creature - Nu Udra
And at the top of this food chain standsNu Udra, the vicious beast designed to be a nightmare for players—and even for the development team.
The first striking thing aboutNu Udrais that it resembles an octopus. Notably, it is the first cephalopod-type monster that is not an Elder Dragon, unlike Nakarkos, for example. Fujioka explains that its creation was a challenging yet highly rewarding process. Nu Udra is the undisputed ruler of this region, and every aspect of its design—from the flammable oil it secretes to its adaptability—fits seamlessly into the Oily Basin.

NicknamedThe Black Flame, this beast can fully utilize its surroundings to its advantage. Its flexible body allows it to hide in crevices or coil around columns and pipes with animations that Fujioka takes great pride in. When fighting it, each tentacle is an independent threat. Mechanics have been introduced to help players identify which tentacle is about to strike, emphasizing cooperative play with fellow hunters.
The tentacles can perform singular strikes or wide-area attacks, making severing them a key strategy to reduce the danger. Of course, cutting them off provides materials, but it’s crucial to loot quickly before they rot, yielding lower-quality rewards. Tentacles aren’t just for offense—they house the octopus’s sensory organs. As a result, Nu Udra is immune to flash bombs, so don’t count on them for an easy advantage.
