Robert Downey Jr. arguably has the most significant impact on Hollywood in the 21st century. The American actor gave a powerful start to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by donning the metal suit of Iron Man, propelling the franchise to an unmatched box office success. However, the actor considered his time in prison better than working with one of his films.

Downey Jr. has had quite a journey since his 1999 prison sentence of 15 months for possession of drugs and a gun. Robert Downey Jr. Despised Working On This Film
While it might sound surprising, his time in prison wasn’t the worst experience ofRobert Downey Jr.’slife. According to the actor, he hated working on a film starring Tommy Lee Jones andWesley Snipes. The filmU.S. Marshalscame out in 1998, just before the actor was sentenced to jail. Downey Jr. played the villain John Royce, an undercover operative in the US police force. The film is centered around a group of Marshals who go on a mission to arrest a notorious crime boss.
Although the movie played a crucial role in shaping Robert Downey Jr. as an actor, but he did not fancy his time on the set, stating he’d“rather wake up in jail for a TB test than have to wake up another morning knowing I’m going to the set of U.S. Marshals.”

Downey Jr. said (viaFarout):
“You’ve had a traumatic year, you’ve been practically suicidal — what do you think would be really healing for you? How about like twelve weeks of running around as Johnny Handgun? I think that if you talk to a spirit guide, they would say, ‘That’ll kill you.’… I thought maybe there was something I was missing, and what I really needed to do was to be in one of those films that I love taking my kid to. It would end up being really depressing.”
The actor also said that he doesn’t recall much about the film, except for the fact that it was trying to be similar toThe Fugitive.

Robert Downey Jr. Wasn’t Sure About Iron Man Initially
Robert Downey Jr. was filled with excitement when he was presented with the idea of starring as Iron Man, as such opportunities were rare and lucrative at the same time. However, years later, the actor confessed that he had reservations about assuming the coveted role at the beginning.
He toldCinema,

“I had a feeling that I was supposed to do it. Then I thought ‘Am I wrong? Am I just convincing myself? Am I just trying to set myself up for disappointment?’ Then I thought, ‘No I think I am supposed to do this movie’.”
It was Tony Stark’s origin story that set the record straight for the MCU. In the following years, his character became a driving force for the Avengers, concluding in an epic decade-long saga. Over the years, the fans got to see a transformed actor from what they knew at the beginning. However, not everyone appreciates the effort he had put in to put on the suit.
