Benicio del Toro won an Academy Award for his supporting role in the crime drama film,Traffic. del Toro had played roles in big franchises like Codebreaker DJ in theStar Warssequel trilogy and Taneleer Tivan / The Collector in the MCU. But the Puerto Rican actor’s most notable role in recent times is the CIA-trained Mexican assassin, Alejandro Gillick, in theSicariofilm series.

Sicario(2015) followed the story of FBI and CIA agents involved in the U.S. war on drugs in Mexico. del Toro’s character became the prime focus of theSicariosequel,Sicario: Day of the Soldado, released in 2018. Benicio del Toro will once again reprise the role in the third installment.

Benicio del Toro Will Play The Action-Packed Role Once Again

WhenSicario 2was released back in 2018, one of the producers, Trent Luckinbill, stated that a third movie was in development. However, no further news about theBenicio del Torostarrer was heard until 2021. In January 2021, the producers announced the title of the sequel,Sicario: Capos, and shared that filming will begin in the spring or summer of that year. Later, another producer Molly Smith mentioned that the film was still in the development phase.

However, after a long wait, producer Basil Iwanyk has shared promising updates about the movie. Iwanyk, who also producedJohn Wickmovies, revealed that the writing for the movie was in progress until the WGA strike interrupted the process. Iwanyk appeared in an interview with The Messenger and shared that as soon as the strike ends, the writers will be back penningSicario: Capos.

Interestingly, the WGA strike is ending thanks to a recent agreement between the WGA and the AMPTP. Iwanyk further shared his excitement to see Benicio del Toro back in the action role. Iwanyk toldThe Messenger:

“When we can continue writing it. It was pencils down, but the idea is awesome. I can’t wait for Sicario 3. I could watch Benicio play that guy forever. I mean, I can watch Benicio in anything, but with that character, it doesn’t get old.”

Earlier,Josh Brolinalso expressed his interest in returning to theSicariofranchise. Fans are hopeful about the project after Iwanyk and Brolin’s assurance that the project is still happening. Notably, the first two movies were written byYellowstonecreator,Taylor Sheridan.

Will Benicio del Toro Reprise His Role In The MCU Films?

Benicio del Toro played a major role in the first installment of theGuardians of the Galaxy. He reprised his role as The Collector inAvengers: Infinity War,where Thanos destroyed his base in Knowhere. Fans had wondered whether The Collector survived the events ofInfinity WaruntilJames Gunnconfirmed his fate inThe Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

It was mentioned in the special episode that the Guardians bought Knowhere from The Collector. del Toro also hinted the character was alive during a promotional interview forSicario 2. The Collector might have a future in the MCU, even after the conclusion of theGuardians of the Galaxymovie series. Interestingly,Jeff Goldblum’s character Grandmaster and The Collector are practically brothers and the two have combined storylines in the Marvel comics.

However, with the way things are going down at Marvel, it is doubtful whether del Toro will reprise the role again.Sicario: Caposis currently a more viable and interesting project for the actor than the Marvel role.
