Another Green Lantern Gets Exciting Tease From ‘Superman’ Star

Ahead of his debut in James Gunn’s Superman, Nathan Fillion recently took the time totease his role as Guy Gardner, an iconic Green Lantern with an unpopular personality. In the source material, the character is known for his sometimes off-putting arrogance, despite his status as one of the galaxy’s greatest protectors. As Fillion notes, you don’t have to be “good” to wield the powerful ring, but just “fearless.” His role as Gardner will lean into this, and the actor goes as far as to say he is a “jerk.”

“He’s a jerk! What’s important to know is, you don’t have to be good to be a Green Lantern; you just have to be fearless. So Guy Gardner is fearless, and he is not very good. He’s not nice, which is very freeing as an actor because you just think to yourself, what is the most selfish, self-serving thing I can do in this moment? And that’s the answer. That’s what you do in that moment. I think if he has a superpower, it might be his overconfidence, in that he thinks he could take on Superman. He can’t!”

Of course, as fans know, Green Lanterns must also have the sufficient willpower to carry the mantle. It isn’t just about being fearless, but it is a good chunk of the ordeal. Fillion’s comments tease a comic-accurate interpretation of the character, one that will likely be far apart from the superheroes audiences will be introduced to in HBO’s upcoming series.
