Rockstar has surprised fans with a massive update to Grand Theft Auto Trilogy, the widely-panned re-release of the PlayStation 2-era titlesGrand Theft Auto 3,Grand Theft Auto: Vice CityandGrand Theft Auto: San Andreas, that includes a few gameplay adjustments, and most importantly, a new Classic Lighting option. This comes three years after the collection’s initial release, which at launch, featured graphics upscaled using progressive AI, but were marred by a whole host of technical issues and fan complaints that the original games looked better. The Classic Lightning mode brings with it new bloom, new fire special effects, new glass-shattering animations and a brighter, more dynamic sky.

Rockstar Games Addresses Massive Grand Theft Auto VI Leak

Fans were excited when Grand Theft Auto Trilogy was initially announced, but soon after, it became clear that Rockstar was repackaging the mobile versions of each title and releasing them for consoles. Those worst fears came true when upon release, the remaster collection wasn’t even playable on PC for days, and that came after it was pulled from digital storefronts for hours due to music rights issues.Remastering the games in Unreal Engine 4 improved some parts, but broke just as many, if not more, resulting in the collection becoming Rockstar’s worst-reviewed game launch. While this new update is a step in the right direction, it’s been available on mobile devices for a full year before coming to consoles. Considering how the PC port was treated, fans weren’t too surprised that it tookfourteen years for the PC portofRed Dead Redemptionto finally make it to the platform.

The Better Late Than Never Update

While this new update is a step in the right direction, it’s been available on mobile devices for a full year before coming to consoles.

The new Grand Theft Auto Trilogy update not only improves the graphics, but it also adds new quality-of-life features, includingthe ability to run and gun in Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City. The changing weather patterns of San Andreas also make a welcome return. Rockstar’s patch notes were sparse, with no mention of most of the improvements, forcing fans to rely on each other and social media as more adjustments are noticed by players.

Grand-Theft-Auto-V

It’s been two years since the last update to Grand Theft Auto Trilogy and this might be the last. In the meantime, Rockstar has been working onGrand Theft Auto 6, expected toarrive in Fall 2025, 12 years and 2 consoles generations after the release ofGrand Theft Auto 5. The next entry will bring you back to Vice City and introduces Lucia, the new female protagonist, but what won’t be changing, is getting in over your head in a seedy criminal underworld. Until then, the latest Grand Theft Auto Trilogy patch is now available on Xbox Series consoles, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch.
