Throughout your adventures inTainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, there will be various activities you can partake in, not just slaying monsters. Like most RPGs, Tainted Grail has a means of fishing. Here, you can get a fishing rod and try to catch as many fish as you can carry, filing out your journal and even keep track of your current records.

With that said, you can’t immediately jump into catching fish. While you don’t have to acquire any bait or lures, you will first need to find a fishing rod to start your journey. In this guide, we will show you to the two means of obtaining a fishing rod very early on.

Sometimes traders traveling across Avalon are picked up by bandits, and sometimes it’s your job to get the goods back.

How to Obtain a Fishing Rod

Finding One in the World

There are a couple of ways of obtaining a fishing rod in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, but one comes very early on in the story and it’s completely free. When you shipwreck in the Horns of the South, if you look to your immediate left there will be a small island with some rather intimidating ancient structures. You can either take the bridge from above or swim to it.

Here, you will encounter a couple of undead monsters that need dispatching, but afterward head inside the structure. There will be a handful of locked cells, with one busted wide open and a small drop into some water. Maneuver inside this cell to find a small box in the back. Here, you will find a fishing rod and a handful of fish.

Buying it Off a Merchant

The second option is if you have no desire to teleport back to the first part of the map and collect it yourself. There will be merchants around the world that will sell you a fishing rod, but it’s not just any old merchant. Alchemists and blacksmiths won’t have any stock, but instead more general shops will carry them.

The first you will come across isOrlaith’sin the Horns of the South settlement very early on in the story. She will gladly sell you a fishing rod for a measly eight gold coins. Early on, eight gold coins might seem like a lot, but considering you can pickpocket most NPCs for more than that, or even sell what you find fishing, you can make that back in a flash.

What to do with a Fishing Rod?

While a fishing rod may not be a fancy new sword or magical device, it can still be a powerful tool for finding and acquiring unique items. There’s a bevy of items to be found in the vast oceans and lakes, some of which aren’t just floundering fish.

With that said, the main purpose of the fishing rod is to kick back and have a relaxing time, acquiring fish and be competitive with yourself when seeing how big of a fish you can catch. On top of that, there is one side quest,120 Days of Herring and Cheese, that requires you to break out the fishing rod and acquire a unique fish. This one in particular is far easier to catch than the rest, being more of an introduction to fishing than anything else.
