Just from the title alone, fans can tell thatCaptain America: Civil Warwill feature some explosive action, literally and figuratively, withMarvel’s greatest heroes divided and fighting against each other. This epic adventure will set the stage forPhase Three, which culminates withAvengers: Infinity War Part IandAvengers: Infinity War - Part II, and are set to shoot back-to-back at the end of this year. It may surprise some fans to hear directorJoe Russodiscuss the “love story” that lies at the heart ofCaptain America: Civil War, between none other thanSteve Rogers(Chris Evans) and his longtime friend Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Here’s what the director had to say about this intriguing dynamic.

“What’s fascinating about the Cap-Bucky story as well is it’s a love story. These are two guys who grew up together, and so they have that same emotional connection to each other as brothers would, and even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up. Is he good or is he bad? Steve has to answer that question for himself, and there are other characters in the movie who hold the opposite point of view. It becomes a very explosive. It incites a lot of conflict.”

We first met Bucky Barnes inCaptain America: The First Avenger, where we learned that Bucky was childhood friends with Steve Rogers, long before he became Captain America. While he was thought to have died in that movie, he came back to life asThe Winter SoldierinCaptain America: The Winter Soldier. We last saw Bucky in the end credits sequence ofAnt-Man, where he was found by Cap andThe Falcon(Anthony Mackie), and he was starting to regain his memories. Empire also spoke withSebastian Stan, who offered his take on the Bucky-Cap relationship.

“I think it’s easy and generalizing it to say that they’re lovers, when you’re forgetting that one has a lot of guilt because he swore to be the protector of the other, the father figure or older brother so to speak, and then left him behind. I have no qualms with it but I think people like to see it much more as a love story than it actually is. It’s brotherhood to me.”

Buckywill be fighting alongside his old friend in Team Cap with The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp) andAnt-Man(Paul Rudd). Team Iron Man includes Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Vision (Paul Bettany), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and the new character T’challa (Chadwick Boseman). It was also revealed in thenew trailerforCaptain America: Civil Warthat the newSpider-Man(Tom Holland) will be on Team Iron Man, but it still isn’t known how large his role is.
