Earlier this week, Empire Magazine revealed the cover of their latest issue, which features the stars ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,Henry CavillasSupermanandBen Affleckas Batman. Today we have more details from the issue, where directorZack Snyderreveals new connections to anotherDC Comicsadaptation,Suicide Squad. We already know that Batman will be featured inSuicide Squad, thanks to photos from the set and the trailer shown atComic-Con, butZack Snyderrevealed that the Dark Knight actually has a history with all of theSuicide Squadmembers, since he put all of them in prison.
It has been rumored thatSuicide Squadactually takes place beforeBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hasn’t been confirmed yet, but if it proves to be true, it could tie in to the soloBatman moviethatBen Affleckis planning to star in and direct. As forBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,Zack Snyderconfirmed that Batman has been fighting crime for over 20 years when the story begins.
“We are playing him 45 or 46. He has been Batman for 20 years. All the history is there. Was there a Robin at one time? Possibly.”
It seems that this interview took place before the secondBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailerwas released, where fans clearly saw Bruce Wayne looking at the superhero suit that belonged to his former sidekick Robin. The suit has graffiti over the front that reads “Ha ha ha joke’s on you Batman,” indicating that The Joker, played byJared Letoin Suicide Squad, is the one who killed him. The director also commented that Batman has reached a point in his life where he’s ready for change.
“We want to assume that Batman has reached this point in his life and career as a superhero, and Superman represents a sort of philisophical change. He is a paradigm shift for Batman: ‘I’ve been fighting criminals all my life, trying to find justice, and now I am confronted with a concept that is transcendent to me. In the face of Superman, a man robbing a bank doesn’t matter…. He’s having a crisis of conscience. ‘Am I really just a vigilante who stalks the alleys of Gotham?’ It is rich stuff that he deals with. Ben does an amazing job.”
The new trailer also featured a funeral procession scene, which was teased months ago when photos surfaced from the Detroit set. While it was never revealed who was actually buried there, it is believed to be his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, whose deaths are also briefly teased in the trailer.Ben Affleckalso revealed that he didn’t think he was right to play Batman at first, but he warmed to the director’s take on the iconic character, which he describes as a “f—ed up Batman.”
“Initially I thought, ‘I’m older, it doesn’t seem like the right sort of fit for me.’ Then Zack pitched me his concept for this older, more broken, kind of f**ked up Batman. It was something we haven’t seen. We have seen that Batman is willing to cross the line to protect people. That vigilantism has been a part of his character all along, and we are tapping into that mentality when faced by something as potentially as deadly a Superman.”
Zack Snyderhinted to Empire that Batman could be seen as a villain ofBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but it really comes down the each fan’s perspective. It isn’t known yet if eitherBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeorSuicide Squadwill actually show Batman putting the members of Task Force X away at Belle Reve prison, but we’ll have to wait and see.
