There are four iPhone models joining the already announced iPhone SE (2022). These come in the form of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, along with iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Yes, that means that the iPhone mini is dead for this year.

Release date

Apple announced the new flagship iPhone models at an event on 7 September. The devices are available to preorder from 9 September. The iPhone 14 will be available from 16 September, while the iPhone 14 Plus will be available 7 October.

In terms of price, theiPhone 14 starts at $799 - the same as the iPhone 13 did. The iPhone 14 Plus costs $100 more so $899.

The Apple iPhone 14 models follow a very similar design to their predecessors, with a notch at the top of the display. This means they look different to the iPhone 14 Pro models that have a pill-shape cutout at the top of their displays.

A flat-edge design is present again for the iPhone 14 models, and it’s an aluminium frame with a glass rear rather than stainless steel and glass, which is what the Pro models offer. A dual rear camera is present once again, within a square camera housing that is positioned in the top left corner.

The iPhone 14 models offer anIP68 water and dust resistanceand come in a range colour options, including Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Purple and Product (RED).

There is an iPhone 14 and an iPhone 14 Plus in 2022, and no iPhone 14 mini. The iPhone 14 has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Plus has a 6.7-inch display, which puts it in line with the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The standard models getApple’s ProMotion 120Hz refresh ratethis year though - moving them up from the 60Hz displays of the iPhone 13 models.

What the standard models don’t get though is the Always-on Retina display that you’ll find on the Pro models.

Hardware and specs

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus don’t get a processor upgrade for 2022, remaining on the A15 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU that powers the iPhone 13 Pro instead of moving to the A16 Bionic, which the iPhone 14 Pro models feature.

All iPhone 14 models are5G compatiblegiven all iPhones, including the entry-level iPhone SE (2022), have been since the iPhone 12. There’s also satellite connectivity on the iPhone 14 models for emergency SOS. This is being rolled out in the US and Canada first and will be included free for 2 years.

It’s worth mentioning all US models of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus won’t have a physical SIM tray anymore - with all switching toeSIM.

In terms of storage, the standard iPhone 14 models come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB options.

All the iPhone 14 models run on iOS 16, which Apple previewed at WWDC. You canread our separate feature on itfor all the features and details.

The iPhone 14 models have a dual rear setup, like their predecessors, though there are upgrades. There’s a 12-megapixel main sensor on board with a wider aperture of f/1.5 and 1.9µm pixels. This is the same sensor that was in the iPhone 13 Pro models.

There’s also the same 12-megapixel ultrawide camera on the back. Additionally, Apple has introduced a Photonic Engine to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, said to help improve low-light shots - and because it’s a software solution, it boosts all cameras.

The front camera of the iPhone 14 models has also been upgraded, with autofocus and an aperture of f/1.9, so you’ll get better selfies out of it.
